Your role
The Philanthropy Lead is crucial in helping to raise funds and enabling our strategic growth. Reporting to the Head of Philanthropy and Partnerships, you will be responsible for growing unrestricted and restricted income through developing relationships with War Child’s major donors, (existing and prospective) and writing compelling and tailored proposals to increase our reach. You will lead on the development and delivery of the Philanthropy strategy working closely with the Head of Philanthropy and Partnerships.
As an integral member of the Philanthropy and Partnerships Team, you will bring creativity, insight and experience to the team, as well as being a key voice and representative internally and externally. You will contribute to the wider Fundraising & Communications strategy by taking a lead role in cross-team projects and activities.
Your responsibilities
- To provide first-rate line management to the philanthropy team. You will model excellence in management that will result in the team thriving in their roles, with high standards of performance and behaviour, and team members that are developed to achieve their best, whilst maintaining strong wellbeing. As a senior member of the Philanthropy and Partnerships team you will model these high standards of performance and behaviour to support the Head of Philanthropy and Partnerships.
- To develop first-rate relationships with major donors (potential and existing) so that War Child is in a strong position to motivate and engage people into transformational levels of philanthropic giving.
Develop first-rate relationships of high profile individuals and Ambassadors, engaging them with War Child’s work and maximising their involvement to fundraise, advocate and make connections for War Child’s work. In addition to this, manage and support the Ambassador & Advocate Manager who leads on the strategy for high profile individuals. Maintain a culture of delivering excellent relationship management, supporting team members to develop and implement strong cultivation and solicitation plans for prospects and donors to generate significant income from the portfolio. This will include personal meetings, attending networking events, writing proposals, making presentations and representing War Child at meetings with donors.
- Work with other War Child teams across the wider organisation particularly Children in Conflict (our sister organisation in New York) where there is cross over with philanthropic relationships in the States.
- Drive the sustainable long-term growth of major donors and deliver on annual income targets. Monitor income and expenditure targets and provide regular progress reports and updates on performance against target using War Child’s database, Salesforce.
- Lead, manage and motivate a team of fundraisers to succeed through making sure they are trained and skilled and have a clear understanding of their own objectives and workplan.
- To be a practitioner, modelling high standards of hands-on philanthropic fundraising to your team.
- Ensure a strong and diverse pipeline of major donors is developed and in use (restricted and unrestricted), building up key knowledge to establish motivations to maximise income potential.
- Support the Head of Philanthropy and Partnerships on the development and implementation of department strategy, budgeting and planning.
- Take an active role, and lead where relevant, on the planning and delivery of a diverse portfolio of philanthropy events, including events that are hosted by Global Ambassadors.
- Always maintain an up to date knowledge of current activities of War Child and be an advocate of the War Child brand.
- Managing project groups, having autonomy and oversight of entire projects and all key decisions with support from a senior sponsor.
- Contribute to creating a culture committed to the safeguarding of children and adults and compliant to WCUK’s Safeguarding and PSEAH Policies.
You are
- Experienced in a similar fundraising role, with a specialist knowledge of major donors and high-profile supporters, ideally within an international development or humanitarian NGO so you can present War Child’s work with authority.
- Experienced in working in a target led environment with a proven track record of successful fundraising results, delivering against targets (including securing six-figure gifts) and income growth.
- An excellent relationship manager with strong networking skills at senior levels internally and externally
- An excellent communicator, confident in managing relationships, influencing and negotiating as well as writing formal and informal communications.
- Experienced in planning, budgeting and monitoring performance across multiple audiences, including the management of six figure income streams.
- Experienced in creating and/or leading on a Philanthropy Strategy in line with an organisational fundraising strategy, including getting buy in from Senior Leadership and internal stakeholders to bring a strategy to life.
- Solid experience of line management and a strong understanding of the principles of motivational people management and individual development.
- Strong experience of project leadership, including critically evaluating activities to achieve strategic priorities and maximise their effectiveness.
- Ability to present information, verbally or in writing, including briefings and project reports to a range of audiences in a clear, confident and inspirational manner.
- Able to demonstrate experience of successfully planning and delivering events.
- Up to date knowledge of fundraising regulation and GDPR, and its implications for fundraising policy and practise.
